Destructive mining

Dredge mining for mineral sands on Stradbroke Island is very destructive.

Sandmining on Straddie for mineral sands uses a technique called dredge mining; this is very destructive and requires the removal of all vegetation and digging very large mining craters, destroying the sand dunes and soil structure which have taken millions of years to naturally develop.  (See more about dredge mining.)

Although the mining company, Sibelco, claims that mined areas can be rehabilitated, the evidence proves otherwise.
